Fact: Your cycle is an inherently inflammatory process within your body.
Recommendation: Support your body with anti-inflammatory practices every day and specifically during your luteal and menstrual phase. Include ginger, turmeric, omega-3s in your diet, and Epsom salt baths, castor oil packs, and walking in your routine.
Fact: You can do all the things for your hormones, but if you aren’t getting quality sleep, you’ll get nowhere.
Recommendation: Get consistent, quality sleep. Your hormones know when to release based on your circadian rhythm, which is established with your sleep. When you don’t have a sleep schedule, your hormones suffer. Same bed and wake time (within 30 mins each day), at least 8 hours of sleep, more during your luteal phase.
Fact: Your luteal phase is the two weeks leading up to your first day of a full bleed.
Recommendation: Take good care of yourself during this phase of your cycle. Progesterone is the main show during this time, which makes you more sensitive to stress than in the first half of your cycle.
Fact: Progesterone, released from your ovaries during your luteal phase, causes your basal temperature in your body to rise.
Recommendation: Support the natural warmth of your body with warm cooked foods, keeping your feet warm with socks and slippers around the house, use the sauna or epsom salt baths, drink warm beverages and teas, and avoid cold plunging and cold beverages.
Fact: Your uterus is a muscle.
Recommendation: How you would relax other muscles in your body is how you can relax your uterus. Breathing deeply, warmth, massage, magnesium in your diet, or supplementation, all encourage muscle relaxation.
Fact: Your liver is a hormone powerhouse.
Recommendation: Your liver supports detoxing estrogen from your body. You want it in tip-top shape to support your hormonal balance. Stay fully hydrated, use castor oil packs on your abdomen, limit alcohol, eat your greens, drink dandelion tea, and lemon water in the morning.
Fact: Your toilet paper choices impact your hormones.
Recommendations: Use non-toxic toilet paper. A lot of the major brands do not use vagina friendly ingredients in their products. Now think about how often you use toilet paper, about your sensitive skin, and how close it is to your reproductive organs, a recipe for hormonal challenges.
Fact: Constipation disrupts your hormone balance.
Recommendation: Pooping is one of the ways you detox estrogen from your body. You don’t want it building up. Make sure you are getting your fiber, staying fully hydrated, minimizing processed food, healing your gut, and moving your body to keep yourself regular.
Fact: Endometrial lesions create estrogen, causing excess estrogen within your body.
Recommendation: Support all your body’s natural detox pathways—peeing, pooping, and menstruating. And focus on a diet rich in DIM (a natural compound within your gut that metabolizes estrogen)—broccoli and cauliflower.
